Meet
your driver /tour guide. Transfer to Messina by car
or coach. Board the ferry for the 20 minutes ride to
Villa S. Giovanni. Enjoy a city tour of Reggio Calabria
where you will visit the National Museum that houses
the famous "Bronzes of Riace",
two Greek bronze statues dating back to the V century
B.C. Free time to shop or enjoy a walk on the promenade
overlooking Sicily and the straits of Messina, known
as: "The most beautiful kilometre of the Italian
peninsula" . We continue to the town of Scylla
facing Charybdis (Ganzirri), made famous
in Homer's Odyssey. Admire its Medieval Castle
that lies on a dominating position upon the strait of
Messina and its picturesque fishermen's district called
"Chianalea" where the houses are built
right by the water's edge. We end our tour in Palmi
visiting the ethnological museum.
Ferries
run every 10/15 minutes from Messina to Villa S. Giovanni, as and when filled.

or coach. Board the ferry for the 20 minutes ride to
Villa S. Giovanni. Drive along the motorway to Salerno
and the Ionian coast of Calabria through a fabulous
landscape of olives and citrus groves
Stilo is situated on a hill, a few miles from
the Ionian sea. This mediaeval town goes back to the
9 or 10 century when some Basilian monks founded a church
and a monastery. We'll visit the 13th century Duomo
and the impressive 9th century Cattolica,
a little Byzantine church (6x6 m.) reminescent of similar
churches on Mounth Athos, in the Peloponnese and Georgia.
Then, we drive on to Bivongi boasting the 11th
century church of St. John Theristis, one
of the oldest Greek-Orthodox churches of Calabria. The
church is still under the authority of the Patriarch
of Costantinople.

Old time Calabria: Gerace and Excavations

Meet

or coach. Board the ferry for the 20 minutes ride to
Villa S. Giovanni. Drive (about two hours) through a
fabulous landscape of olives and citrus groves to the
mediaeval hilltown of Gerace. Visit the ruins
of the mediaeval castle and the famous Norman
Cathedral considered to be one of the largest
in Southern Italy, dating from 11th Century A.D. and
the church of S. Francis with its wonderful
inlaid marble altar. Time for sightseeing on your own
through the narrow medieval style streets.. In the afternoon
our tour continues for a visit to the archeological
ruins of the Greek city of Locri Epizephiri (Ephyzephyrium
Locris)
from 7th century B.C.,
settled by the Greeks of Locris in Western Greece. See
the Temple of Marasà, the Greek -Roman theatre
and the local Antiquarium.

Gerace All
the coaches stop at the parking lot. From here passengers have to get to the town
by a private, little train (Euro 2,50 R/T). Cathedral
of Gerace: Open daily 09.30/13.00-15.00/18.00 (monday closed). Euro
1.00 (tkt including crypt, treasure, upper church)
Excavations of Locri Open
