Friday: Arrival Transfer
from airport to the Corinthia Marina Hotel and check-in. Time at leisure to rest
or shop.
Saturday:
Valletta - Mdina Medieval City - Hagar Qim Temple - Marsaxlokk Our
day begins with a tour of the capital, Valletta, built in 1565 by the Knights
of St. John. We will visit the Upper Barakka Gardens and enjoy a stunning
view of the fortified Grand Harbour. Then, on to the the magnificent St. John's
co- Cathedral featuring the famous Caravaggio's painting "Beheading
of St. John". After a tour of the Grand Masters Palace, once
the seat of the order of St. John and now Malta's parliament building, we drive
to the traditional fishing village of Marsaxlokk in the south of the island,
the best place for fresh fish and an ideal stop for lunch. In the afternoon, we
continue our tour visiting the prehistoric Hagar Qim Temple (3300BC), with
its staggering heavy megaliths ( even 20 tons heavy!). Our final stop for today
is the medieval city of Mdina, which is otherwise known as "The Silent
City" or "città vecchia". Built in the 9th century by the
Arabs, it is the islands old capital. Our walking tour includes all the main highlights
and also a visit to St. Paul's Cathedral. (Breakfast) Sunday
Gozo Island Tour (weather
permitting. In case of bad weather another full day Malta excursion will be provided) After
a 25 minute ferry crossing, we will get to Gozo, greener, more rural and
smaller than Malta. Here, we will visit the oldest free standing temples in the
world, known as Ggantija Temples, dating back circa.3500 to 4000BC. Enjoy
the many beautiful bays and scenic spots of this island: Calypso Cave which offers
magnificent views over the red sands of Ramla Bay, the Azure Window and Inland
Sea where you can take a boat trip (optional and paid locally) around the sea
locked lake. Stop in the pretty bay of Xlendi, in the south of the
island, for lunch on your own. In the afternoon, we will visit Ta'Pinu Basilica,
the most famous pilgrimage for the locals, and Victoria- the capital town
of the island of Gozo- and The Citadel- the ancient city of the island.
Drive back to the ferry for our return journey back to our hotel. (Breakfast) Monday:
Malta - Catania - Taormina Check-out of hotel and transfer from hotel to
airport for early flight to Catania. On arrival at Catania Airport you will be
greeted and taken to your hotel in Taormina. The rest of your day is at leisure. (Breakfast)
Tuesday:
Catania - Siracusa Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to Catania,
the second largest city on the island with its imposing baroque buildings and
for its streets built with black lava stone. Visit of the old city centre- Piazza
Duomo with the fountain of the "Liotru" elephant statue.
Then, we continue to Siracusa, once the most powerful Greek city in Sicily.
Upon arrival, we will walk in the old picturesque centre of the town, Orthygia
Island, and stop for lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we will visit
of the archaeological area which includes the stunning Greek theatre, the
Ear of Dionisios (type of large cave), the Roman amphitheatre and
Latomie- stone-quarries. Return back to our hotel in Taormina. (Breakfast
and Lunch) Wednesday:
Mount Etna Adventure A short drive by 4x4 jeep takes us to the Northen
slopes of Mt. Etna. Weather and volcanic conditions permitting, we will
experience the lava fields and enjoy incredible view of Europes highest
and most active volcano. Visit Grotta dei Ladroni (Cave of the Thieves)
and Monte Fontana with a spectacular view of Valle del Bove and the extinct
craters of Monte Sartorius. Stop at a typical Sicilian farmhouse for lunch. On
the way back to Taormina, we will drive along the old railway track route and
along the Alacantara river and the scenic coastal road. Evening at leisure. (Breakfast
and Lunch) Thursday
Taormina Enjoy a full day at leisure in Taormina. The ancient Taurominum,
is a spot of infinite loveliness, the land of Dolce far niente - of sweet
do nothing. The town lies in an elevated position of amazing, almost unique beauty,
affording magnificent views combining sea and sky of a marvelous blue, miles of
a curving coastline and picturesque mountain scenery, while the majestic pyramid
of Mt. Etna on one side constitutes a scene of indescribable beauty. The
most impressive monument of the city is the Greco-Roman Theatre. It has
the finest site of any theatre in the world and one of the most striking monuments
of antiquity. Don't miss the Villa Comunale: the public gardens which are
planted with a huge variety of flowering plants and shrubs ranging from the most
common to the exotic. In the evening get together for a farewell dinner in
a local restaurant. (Breakfast and Dinner) Friday
