Visiting Mt Etna
The ascent of Etna is the highlight of a visit to Sicily, not only for the volcanic phenomena but also for the superb views.
There are two ways to get there – from the south (Rifugio Sapienza), and from the north (Piano Provenzana).
Etna Sud – Southern approach. From Nicolosi follow the sign Etna Sud towards Rifugio Sapienza and the Cable car station. Walking and hiking activities are possible along marked footpaths. You may walk to the upper part of the volcano (return trip from Rifugio Sapienza to the summit about 4 hours). There is an organized excursion from Rifugio Sapienza to the top and takes over two hours. You first take a cable car ride, (€23.00), for a further 500 meters. Here you can admire superb views of Catania and and the sea, walk to the Piccolo Rifugio or have a snack or a drink at the café. The more adventurous can further take a 4X4 drive (€20.00) to reach the summit at 2,900 meters where guides escort people on foot to interesting areas.
Etna Nord – Northen approach From Linguaglossa take the mountain road (Mareneve) to Piano Provenzana, the main ski resort on Etna. Here you can walk to the top in about 3 hours or join an organized excursion by 4 wheel – drive.
